A knife file is a kind of knife-shaped with one edge tapered and curved to the narrow point. Tapered file is used to file V-shaped channels or the joining point between two acute-angled surfaces, cleaning out acute angles, corners, slots. Knife files are made of hardened steel with rows of elevated "teeth." The teeth on the knife file allow it to fulfil its function of filing wood and metal. It is manufactured as per IS 1931:2000, BS498:1960 & GGG- F 325 :1985

The Machinist File – Knife is commonly used in engineering workshops, tool rooms, fabrication units, and maintenance departments for filing narrow grooves, acute angles, and tapered slots. Its knife-shaped profile makes it suitable for reaching restricted areas and finishing sharp internal corners. It is also useful for removing burrs, refining angled edges, and adjusting metal components during fitting and assembly operations.
